  • FTC bans worker noncompete agreements

    Noncompete agreements in worker contracts will be banned under a final rule approved April 23 in a 3-to-2 vote by the Federal Trade Commission. Such agreements can restrict employees from working for a company’s competitors for a period of time within a specified geographic area after the worker leaves a company.The FTC first proposed the ban on noncompetes in January 2023. In the final rule, the FTC determined that noncompete agreements represent an unfair method of competition.“Noncompete clauses keep wages low, suppress new ideas and rob the American economy of dynamism, including from the more than 8,500 new startups that would be created a year once noncompetes are banned,” FTC Chair Lina Khan said in a press release. “The FTC’s final rule to ban noncompetes will ensure Americans have …

  • Biden administration boosts overtime pay salary thresholds

    The US Department of Labor on April 23 increased the salary thresholds required to exempt a salaried executive, administrative or professional employee from federal overtime pay requirements. Effective July 1, the Fair Labor Standard Act’s salary threshold will increase to the equivalent of an annual salary of $43,888, or $844 a week, from the present annual salary threshold of $35,568 enacted by the Trump administration in 2019; it will increase again on Jan. 1, 2025, to $58,656 annually, or $1,128 per week.The rule will also adjust the threshold for highly compensated employees from the current $107,432 per year to $132,964 on July 1, and then to $151,164 on Jan. 1, 2025.Salary thresholds will update every three years by applying up-to-date wage data to determine new salary levels s …

    Groupe Crit SA, a Paris-based international staffing provider, reported weak global economic growth weighed on temporary work revenue in the first quarter. While French temp staffing revenue held steady, revenue from Groupe Crit’s US temp staffing operations fell.Temp staffing first-quarter revenue fell to €468.3 million (US$505.4 million), a decline of 1.0% on an organic basis when also adjusted for number of trading days.Groupe Crit noted French temp staffing revenue remained stable at €339.5 million (US$366.4 million) on an organic basis with adjustment for number of trading days.   • Synergie’s Q1 growth comes from international operations

    International operations boosted first-quarter results at Synergie SE (SDG:PAR), a Paris-based staffing firm. Total revenue rose 3.7% year over year in the first quarter to €751.4 million, though the increase was 1.9% on a like-for-like basis.The lion’s share of growth took place in Synergie’s international operations, where revenue rose 8.6% to €447.9 million. International revenue included organic growth of 5.7% (excluding impact of exchange rates) as well as the acquisition of Runtime Group in Germany, which had a positive impact of €11.9 million, according to the company.Among Synergie’s international segments, the company cited a good performance in its Southern Europe segment, up 6.7%, driven by the strength of Italian and Spanish operations.   • APSCo manifesto takes aim at UK skills shortage

    The UK’s Association of Professional Staffing Companies launched a manifesto during an event at the House of Commons on 24 April. It contains recommendations aimed at tackling the UK’s professional skills shortage.“Research from our members, trusted partners and global strategic partners such as LinkedIn are all pointing to the same issue in the UK: a severe shortage of professional skills that is only growing,” Tania Bowers, global public policy director at ASPCo, said in a press release. “Businesses are facing a critical lack of workers, with IT, digital, engineering and healthcare some of the hardest hit remits.”It’s crucial that major political parties have a plan in place to beat the skills crisis, Bower said.“We’ve already started engaging with key policy makers across the core polit …

  • Belgium’s temporary employment sector falls slightly in March

    Belgium saw the number of hours of temporary work performed a decrease of 1.29% in March 2024 when compared to the same period a year ago, according to calendar-basis adjusted data from Federgon, the Belgian federation of staffing agencies.This decline was the result of a decrease in activity of 0.35% in the blue-collar segment and 2.49% in the white-collar segment.  On a monthly basis, March saw an increase of 0.39%.   • EOR provider Rippling raises US$200 million in funding round

    Rippling, a provider of employer-of-record services, announced a US$200 million funding round on 22 April, according to a post by co-founder and CEO Parker Conrad. The company also signed agreements with investors to repurchase up to US$590 million of equity from current employees, former employees and early investors.Rippling is now valued at US$13.5 billion.The funding will go toward research and development; building more robust software products; and equipping customers with more intelligent workflows, analytics and tools, the company said in a LinkedIn post.“This system we’ve built helps companies run more efficiently and achieve their business goals faster than their competitors,” Conrad wrote. “We will continue to expand in new markets and invest deeply in R&D to enhance our cur …

  • Australian salaries grow at slowest yearly pace in 18 months

    Seek’s index of advertised salaries in Australia is rising, but March’s 4.2% year-over-year increase in the index marks the slowest rise in 18 months.When compared to February, March’s index level was up 0.2%. March was the third month in a row in which Seek’s Advertised Salary Index for Australia posted a month-over-month increase of 0.2%.“The peak of advertised salary growth is in the past,” Seek Senior Economist Matt Cowgill said in a press release. “We’ve now had six months in which the SEEK [Advertised Salary Index] has grown at just 0.2% or 0.3% month on month.”Still, advertised salaries continue to outpace inflation, which is good news for job seekers, Cowgill said.     The average hourly wage for temp workers rose in March in three major Japanese metro areas tracked by Dip Co. Ltd. Those areas were Kanto, Tokai and Kansai. The average hourly wage rose to JPY 1,605 (USD 10.37) in March, an increase of JPY 46, or 3.0%, from the same time last year and an increase of JPY 30 compared to February, a 1.9% increase.Here’s a breakdown of average hourly wage growth by metro area: Kanto.   • Job seekers in Japan are getting picker about where they work

    Young job seekers in Japan are becoming choosier over where they work as the number of workers declines, and companies are stepping up their recruitment efforts, including putting more of a focus on work-life balance, Nikkei Asia reported. “Before, companies were the ones choosing from a large batch of applicants, but now students are also selecting the companies, and the asymmetry in that relationship is weakening,” Yosuke Hasegawa, a researcher at Mynavi Career Research Lab, told Nikkei Asia. “More companies take care in listening to applicants’ wishes regarding the kind of jobs they want to do or the region they want to work in.”

  • South Korea will likely be hiring more overseas workers

    South Korea is increasingly turning to foreign labour as its population shrinks, The Korea Herald reported. Kim Young-Jung, president of the Korea Information Service, told the newspaper that foreign labour is now concentrated in unskilled jobs, but the country will hire more highly skilled workers in the future. “Korea is getting more and more in need of all kinds of labour,” he said. “The manpower shortage in Korea is not necessarily limited to manual or nonprofessional labor, but highly educated workers are also needed.”

    Freelancer Ltd. (FLN:ASX) today reported Gross Marketplace Volume (GMV) in Q1 2024 of AUD 227.1 million (USD 147.6 million), down 23.8% over the year.     When asked to what extent they agree with the following statement: “Our overall practices for our contingent workforce are leading edge”, 31% of participants agreed (we refer in the report to these as “Leaders”), while another 31% disagreed (“Laggards”). Overall, Leaders are significantly more likely to rate their programs as providing a competitive advantage in talent attraction, retention, and ROI compared to Laggards. Respondents reported a median 20% and average (mean) 22% contingent share of their total workforce. Of the services/technologies listed in our survey, the most commonly used is a VMS, with 81% of respondents noting they have one in place.     Event: The March Employment Situation, released today by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), indicates that total nonfarm employment rose by +303,000 in March on a seasonally adjusted basis, while temporary help services employment declined by -1,300 jobs. The temporary agency penetration rate was 1.74% in, down from a revised February rate of 1.75%. The national unemployment rate declined to 3.8%, from 3.9%.Employment expanded in most industry groups. The group with the largest gain was again Health and social assistance, which added +81,300 jobs; followed by Government, which added +71,000 jobs; and Leisure and hospitality, which added 49,000 jobs.     Key Findings: We forecast the US Staffing Industry will decline 3% in 2024 to reach a size of $184.6 billion, as the industry continues to pull back from prior peak levels. If we exclude the nurse staffing segments (that continue to normalize down steeply from pandemic levels), the remaining staffing industry is expected to be roughly flat this year, in aggregate. We forecast industrial staffing to decrease 5% in 2024 while office/clerical holds stable. We project IT staffing to decline 3% and healthcare staffing to decrease 11%, as both pull back from prior peak levels.     Staff satisfaction is the key to retention. Among staff giving their firm a net promoter “likelihood to recommend” satisfaction score of 0-4, the share saying they were open to quitting was 100%; that share declined with subsequent score increments, and above a score of 7 the share open to quitting was less than 10%. What drives staff satisfaction? Staff repeatedly emphasize two factors. In multiple survey questions respondents indicate that quality of senior leadership and work environment/culture are top drivers of job satisfaction.     About half of UK internal staff said they had used AI in their staffing job over the last year. Of those staff that had used AI in the last year, 33% rated it very helpful; 53% rated it moderately helpful; and 14% rated it not very helpful. Internal staff listed seven tasks for which they were using AI: writing emails and texts; writing job descriptions and job postings; resume writing and editing; research, ideas, and brainstorming; search strings; marketing, market research, and content creation; and sourcing/recruiting.
