  • Insight Global to pay $2.7 million in whistleblower lawsuit

    Staffing company Insight Global LLC agreed to pay $2.7 million related to allegations in a whistleblower lawsuit that it didn’t implement adequate cybersecurity measures during the Covid-19 pandemic, the US Department of Justice announced May 1.The Atlanta-based company, which had a contract with the Pennsylvania Department of Health to provide staffing for Covid-19 contact tracing, did not adequately keep the personal health information of contract tracing subjects confidential and secure, according to the Department of Justice.The whistleblower in this instance, Terralyn Williams Seilkop, will receive a $499,500 share of the settlement.Seilkop, who lives in Florida, formerly worked as Insight Global’s business intelligence reporting manager on the project as an independent contractor, ac …

  • Upwork Q1 revenue up 18.8% with boost from flat-fee pricing

    Upwork Inc. (NASDAQ: UPWK) reported first-quarter revenue rose 18.7% to $190.9 million. Gross margin at the world’s largest talent platform also improved, and net income rose 7.4%.“We continue to accelerate profitability while investing in growth and innovation,” President and CEO Hayden Brown said in a press release.Revenue growth was driven, in part, by the final transition to the company’s new flat-fee pricing structure that was introduced last year, CFO Erica Gessert said in a conference call with analysts.Upwork’s gross services volume — the total amount that clients spend on Upwork’s offerings as well as additional fees to talent and clients for other services — rose 1% to nearly $1.01 billion.Its marketplace take rate rose to 17.7% in the first quarter from 14.7% in the first quarte …

  • Cognizant revenue slips 1.2%, though growth seen in Europe

    First-quarter revenue at Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp. (NASDAQ: CTSH) fell 1.2% in constant currency. The IT services giant reported revenue declines across geographies except for Continental Europe, where revenue rose 3.1%.“During the first quarter, we delivered revenue above the high-end of our guidance range and continued to make progress against our strategic priorities,” CEO Ravi Kumar S said in a press release.The number of employees at Cognizant fell by 7,100 year over year in the first quarter to 344,400.   • Cross Country Q1 results reflect nursing ‘headwinds,’ physician segment up

    Cross Country Healthcare Inc. (NASDAQ: CCRN) cited near-term headwinds in its nursing segment, but its physician staffing segment posted growth. Overall, the Boca Raton, Florida-based healthcare staffing firm reported first-quarter revenue fell 39.1% to $379.2 million. It was within guidance.“Our first-quarter results reflect our ability to execute in a challenging market. We are especially pleased with the momentum we are seeing in physician staffing, homecare and education,” President and CEO John Martins said in a press release. “With near-term headwinds for contingent nursing labor, we continue to right-size our infrastructure while managing the business for the long term.”The company’s physician staffing business posted revenue growth of 16.3% in the first quarter to nearly $47.0 mill …

  • Barrett revenue rises in Q1 as PEO business grows

    First-quarter revenue at Barrett Business Services Inc. (NASDAQ; BBSI) rose 4.4% year over year to $265.8 million with the growth in its PEO business.PEO revenue rose 6.0% to $246.2 million. The increase in PEO revenue came amid a 3% increase in the average number of worksite employees from net new clients and higher average billings per worksite employee.Staffing revenue fell 12.4% year over year to $19.6 million.Barrett recorded a net loss for the first quarter.   • MPs launch inquiry into UK hospitality recruitment

    The UK All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Hospitality and Tourism is launching an inquiry into ‘recruitment and retention of staff in hospitality’.The review will explore the reasons behind high vacancy rates in the sector and make a series of recommendations to government.According to the APPG, the industry has more than 100,000 vacancies and shortages have remained a persistent issue for businesses for several years.It comes as one in five UK adults consider hospitality an appealing industry to work in.   • Greece leads the EU in long-working hours

    Across the EU countries, Greece had the highest share of workers with long hours (11.6%) in 2023, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.Long working hours refer to those workers who usually spend 49 hours or more per week at work.Overall, in 2023, 7.1% of employed people in the EU worked long hours in their main job.While Greece led the way, this was followed by Cyprus (10.4%) and France (10.1%). Meanwhile, the lowest rates were recorded in Bulgaria (0.4%), Lithuania and Latvia (1.1% each). The data showed that there was a higher rate of self-employed people worked long hours (29.3% of total self-employed people) compared with employees (3.6% of total employees).Long working hours were more common among skilled agricultural, forestry and fishery workers ( …

    Ireland’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in April stood at 4.4%, up from a revised rate of 4.1% in March 2024 and from 4.1% in April 2023, according to the Central Statistics Office.Overall, the number of unemployed persons stood at 124,200 in April 2024.Breaking down the results, the monthly unemployment rate in April 2024 rose to 4.7% for females from the revised rate of 4.3% in March 2024, and up from a revised rate of 3.9% in April 2023.At the same time, the monthly unemployment rate in April 2024 was 4.1% for males, up from the revised rate of 3.9% in March 2024 and down from 4.3% in April 2023.Meanwhile, the youth unemployment rate (15-24) increased to 10.6%, from a revised rate of 9.2% in March 2024.     More than 70% of the global workforce is likely to be exposed to climate-change-related health hazards, and existing occupational safety and health (OSH) protections are struggling to keep up with the resulting risks, according to a new report by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).The ILO’s report, ‘Ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate’, says that climate change is already having a serious impact on the safety and health of workers in all regions of the world.Estimates by the ILO showed that more than 2.4 billion workers (out of a global workforce of 3.4 billion) are likely to be exposed to excessive heat at some point during their work, according to the most recent figures available (2020).     Labour hire firms at a farm in Australia are under investigation into possible underpayments and other non-compliance.Labour Hire Authority compliance officers and Fair Work Ombudsman inspectors visited the farm in April, following reports alleging issues with underpayment of workers, record-keeping and licensing, including an allegedly unlicensed provider.     Public employees in the Philippines have decried the extended employment of job order and contract service workers in the government, saying that it prolonged the exploitation of contractual workers, reports PhilStar. Public Services Labour Independent Confederation (PSLINK) president Annie Geron said, “It’s no different from renewing an endo (end-of-contract) worker in the private sector for another six months or so.     Event: The March Employment Situation, released today by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), indicates that total nonfarm employment rose by +303,000 in March on a seasonally adjusted basis, while temporary help services employment declined by -1,300 jobs. The temporary agency penetration rate was 1.74% in, down from a revised February rate of 1.75%. The national unemployment rate declined to 3.8%, from 3.9%.Employment expanded in most industry groups. The group with the largest gain was again Health and social assistance, which added +81,300 jobs; followed by Government, which added +71,000 jobs; and Leisure and hospitality, which added 49,000 jobs.     Staff satisfaction is the key to retention. Among staff giving their firm a net promoter “likelihood to recommend” satisfaction score of 0-4, the share saying they were open to quitting was 100%; that share declined with subsequent score increments, and above a score of 7 the share open to quitting was less than 10%. What drives staff satisfaction? Staff repeatedly emphasize two factors. In multiple survey questions respondents indicate that quality of senior leadership and work environment/culture are top drivers of job satisfaction.     Staffing platforms marry technology and processes found in talent platforms (e.g. two-sided digital labor marketplace, ratings systems, algorithmic recruiting, management, and matching) with traditional staffing firm pricing models. The list of major staffing companies with a platform component has rapidly expanded since the pandemic. Today, 12 of the 15 largest staffing firms worldwide have a staffing platform, up from just four in 2019.
